Northern New England Association of Homes & Services for the Aging (NNEAHSA) was founded on May 18, 1984, at a meeting of representatives of 13 long-term care facilities from Maine and New Hampshire. In January, 1985, an affiliation agreement was signed with the American Association of Homes for the Aging (AAHA), which then became the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA), and now  LeadingAge.

Over the years, NNEAHSA, then Aging Services of Maine & New Hampshire, and now LeadingAge Maine & New Hampshire, has grown steadily under the guidance of numerous dedicated volunteers and staff. The member organizations include nursing homes, assisted living facilities, independent living, federally-assisted and market-rate housing units, home- and community-based services, adult day, memory care, and Life Plan Communities (CCRCs).
